What is Unity?
Unity is a worldwide Christian organization over a century old. Because of similarity in names, Unity has, on occasion, been confused with other organizations. However, there is no connection between Unity and Unitarianism or the Unification church.
Unity is a for people who might call themselves spiritual not religious. It is for those who sense the depths of their own being and celebrate the awareness of a power greater than themselves.
The teachings in Unity bring together ancient wisdom with new interpretations of what it means to be alive and human. Unity inspires different ways to think about the force of love and intelligence known as God.
Unity of Pensacola
Unity of Pensacola's church building dates back to 1906. It began as the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In 1956, Sacred Heart sold the building to the City of Pensacola - under one condition. The city could not resell the building to a Protestant church.
Under City ownership, it housed the Greater Pensacola Symphony Orchestra until the 1960s. The church was then converted by the City into a gymnasium and functioned as such until the Church of Christ bought the church in 1965.
As they were Protestants, their puchase required special dispensation from the the Pope himself for the purchase. They restored the church and used it until Unity Church of Christianity bought it in 1982.
The History of Unity
Charles and Myrtle Fillmore created Unity almost by accident in the 1880s. Both had experienced lifelong health issues in an era when medicine was primitive and doctors had not helped them.
As they explored metaphysical methods of healing - that is, beyond the physical - they discovered what were then new discoveries about the power of mind over body. In years of devoted meditation, they both experienced significant physical healing but also awakened to a spiritual plane where they recognized the innate power in every human being.
Throughout the years, they pulled together teachings of Truth that flow through all the world's great religions. They shared their new understanding through magazines in which they wrote about what they were learning and encouraged others to explore for themselves. Unity Magazine and Daily Word are still published today with global circulation.
They encouraged magazine subscribers to pray together. They began to answer prayer requests which quickly grew into a prayer ministry now called Silent Unity. Unity now has over has over 1000 churches around the world
